Take Your Dad Hiking...

On Father's Day the family and I took my dad up into Big Cottonwood Canyon for breakfast and some hiking. Our picnic site was in Moss Ledge about 5.2 miles up the canyon. We had a really nice day and it was good to have everyone together.

I went up early to get a good site and do a little "pre-hiking" hike. The Canyon is pretty right now, it's really green, the rivers and streams are running fast and there are a lot of waterfalls from the snow melt.

After breakfast we hiked up the little canyon above the picnic site. (From left to right Me, my dad, and Adam)

The waterfall and formations were beautiful and I guess I went a little crazy snapping pictures. The formation is the Proterozoic (Precambrian) Big Cottonwood quartzite with interbedded shale and siltstone.

It was a really nice day to be in the mountains and we had a lot of fun!

Hiking in Red Butte

I'm trying to go hiking as much as I can this summer. The last two Saturdays I've gone for some great hikes at Red Butte. It was so green and all the flowers were out. The gardens were so pretty. There is a lot of amazing hiking in and around Red Butte. The garden goes back into the mountains quite a way but it is fenced off so if you want to hike the mountain you need to stay outside the garden grounds. The trail makes a big loop around Red Butte, it takes you up into the mountains and then drops down into the canyon.

At the highest point there are some amazing veiws of the Salt Lake valley. Down into the canyon there is a river that leads to a pond in the gradens. I really like the canyon because it is so green and trees are growing over the trail and make of some great pictures.
I put more pictures from Red Butte on My Gallery.
